Michael Tornato’s journey in the garment industry began at just 15, when he took on an apprenticeship with a local custom suiting tailor. Alongside mastering foundational skills in sewing and alterations, he ran a fashion blog that quickly gained local recognition in Boston, leading to invitations to both local and international fashion events and fashion weeks. Driven by a passion for garment craftsmanship, he went on to study fashion design in college, where he broadened his knowledge and refined his skills.
During college, Michael gained hands-on experience through internships with renowned menswear brands such as Caputo & Co., Battenwear, and Title of Work. His talent earned him the opportunity to showcase his designs at New York Fashion Week and Saks Fifth Avenue, setting the stage for his professional career.
After earning his degree, Michael freelanced for various clothing companies, supporting product development from initial sketch to production-ready samples. His role included both consulting and creating sample garments. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he adapted quickly, partnering with manufacturers in the Dominican Republic to produce textile-based masks, providing much-needed support to struggling businesses and meeting the urgent need for protective gear.
As mask demand declined post-pandemic, Michael transitioned into technical design roles with production companies in New York City. Ultimately, his experience and dedication led him to establish his own atelier, where he continues to bring his expertise in custom design and high-quality garment production to life.
